Boudoir What to Wear?

A common question asked questions from clients is,

“What should I wear to my boudoir photo shoot?”.

"Can I recommend one thing?"  - Well thats a tricky question as we are all different, have concerns over different parts of our bodies and we all come in different shapes and sizes.

We want you to feel completely comfortable on your shoot. With that in mind, it is truly up to you with how much or how little skin you show. We love for our shoots to show our client’s personality, so feel free to bring something special as well as props. If there’s one piece of advice I can give you regarding how to prepare for a boudoir shoot, it’s this:

Don't be afraid to have fun!

We usually start out shooting with a little more clothing. As you become more comfortable, we can work our way through your outfit choices. Feel free to bring several of your favourite outfits and we’ll discuss on the day the best for the shoot.

Boudoir Photography isn’t just lingerie, that’s Boudoir Photography Myths … If it makes you feel pretty and sensual, then it’s the perfect piece even if it’s just a tee-shirt and shorts that you’d wear lounging around on a lazy Sunday morning. But avoid thick fabric because it just adds weight on you; always go for thin and transparent fabric.

The trick to good lingerie is that it’s well fitting and holds things where they should be!

Pre-session advice

DO cut out all tags from your clothing options including the washing instructions inside the garment (little white tags w/ care instructions).

DON’T wear anything that is too small and digs into your skin or creates marks! Your underwear should also be in good condition and fit well. You don’t want to be constantly tugging the bra down or pulling your underwear up.

DO consider high waisted knickers/shapewear and/or corset belt, if the tummy is area of concern. Plus size recommendations

DO high waisted knickers, shapewear, bodysuits or beautifully detailed lace teddy to reveal more. Pair with off the shoulder cardigan, button down shirt or lace robe.

DO consider normal clothing if you’re nervous about being too revealing, such as off the shoulder T shirt, cardigans, a fitted button-up shirt, or a high slit skirt/dress. Many of these items can be paired with gorgeous underwear to make a very sexy (but less skimpy) outfit.

DON'T include - loose & flowy (baby doll’s), busy coloured patterns, neon colours and costumes.

DO invest in at least one really great bra and knicker set that compliments your body type and makes you feel confident and sexy. Basic black is always a classic choice, but don’t be afraid to try other colours but don’t opt for crazy patterned material or psychedelic colours.

DO bring accessories. Pearls, long necklaces, significant jewellery, gorgeous earrings.

DO remember that sometimes no outfit can be the best outfit. Some of our favourite images were photos taken when our client wasn’t wearing anything clothing-related, and simply covered up with a white sheet, towel, pillow, or a prop. The alternate, with clever posing and lighting, you can retain your modesty and create beautifully subtle photos wearing nothing at all!

Lingerie Styles

There are many different styles of lingerie, with a variety of designs to suits all body shapes and sizes. For this reason, coupled with the hygiene, the studio does not supply any lingerie. The fit of your lingerie should revolve around your best assets. This is a time for you to highlight what you like best about your body and show it off!

Trust your instinct - find items that naturally draw you to them. Sessions are about YOU. Be honest with what you want. You will feel twice as good on the shoot day when you honestly like your outfit. You want to let your personality shine here, so being honest with what you like is the best first step in that process.

Remember - The trick to good lingerie is that it’s well fitting and holds things where they should be!

Bras

Vary dramatically in style, so choose something that fits well and suits your shape. Go for a balcony bra to show off your cleavage, or a lace bralette for a soft, romantic look. Bralettes can be very pretty for petite ladies, whereas structured underwired bras are best for voluptuous ladies. Make sure that you’re wearing a bra that fits right, it can not only change your world, but also your photos!

Knickers

Come in different shapes to suit your body; high-waisted designs smooth the tummy and add a vintage touch, whilst Brazilians and thongs accentuate your bum. (Consider high waisted knickers/shapewear if your tummy is an area of concern.)

Corsets

Are perfect for accentuating your hourglass shape. They are designed to shape the torso and often have vertical boning for support, with lace up the back to cinch the waist. Longer lengths that overlap your knickers are more flattering for most, whilst under-bust corsets work well with a simple bra.

Basques

These streamline your figure and most have integral suspenders that look great with stockings. Look out for pretty detailing like sheer panels, lacing and ribbons.

Bodies

Smooth your shape and offer support to your tummy. Curvier ladies make sure to choose one with under-wiring to support your bust. They are extremely flattering, comfortable, and photography beautifully. You can find casual bodysuits in solid, soft cotton or go for something dramatic with lace or a bold colour.

Stockings

Stockings are undoubtedly a sexy choice, optional suspender belts as well to finish the look, but don’t forget to try them on and choose a style with a wide band at the top to keep a smooth line on your thighs.

Heels

These are an essential for any Boudoir photoshoot if you want to elongate your legs, elevate your stance and bring out the best curves. So dig out your favourite shoes that you can’t walk in but just can’t be ignored in the wardrobe any longer.

Oversized Shirt

This can be worn over your lingerie or with nothing at all for a sensual, playful look. It could be your partner’s best work shirt or a well-loved band t-shirt, or something you’ve bought for yourself.

Baggy Jumper

If you’re really not interested in baring it all, considering wearing an oversized sweater for this adorable and playful boudoir pose. Simply exposing your long legs will leave plenty to the imagination.

Cardigan

If lacy lingerie isn’t for you, or you want to cover up or even hide areas, try this cosy and casual outfit instead. Wear your favourite cardigan purposely unbuttoned to show off just the right amount of skin/lingerie or use it as an accessory and have the off the shoulder look.

Robe

Robe or kimono offers a classic, elegant look and is really flattering. Choose silky material to skim over your body or sheer material for a racier look.

Nighties, Slips, Camisole

These fit like a dress and are usually short and around hip length, but they come in longer styles as well. There’s a wide variety of options here depending on fabric/colour/detailing, from super soft cotton to dramatic sheer lace. Babydolls are to be avoided as they tend to be less flattering.

Jewellery

Jewellery can complete an outfit and tell a story, be it chandelier earrings to add a touch of glamour, a long string of pearls for a vintage look or a bold necklace, the options are endless.

Jackets

A jacket looks great over lingerie, be it a leather jacket rocky look or your smartest blazer for a classy yet mischievous image.

A Sheet

Bring out the inner Marilyn, classy and sensual at the same time, using a simple white sheet, modest backgrounds and amazing lighting, ensuring the images are about you and your inner Marilyn.

Nothing!

Dare to bare all in the studio. With clever posing and lighting, you can retain your modesty and create beautifully subtle photos wearing nothing at all.

Keep in mind that you’ll likely feel more comfortable than you might anticipate once you arrive, get all make-up and hair done up, and start warming up during the session so we do recommend bringing outfits options on both ends of the spectrum, just in case!

The true secret to great boudoir photos isn’t what you wear…....

It’s all about attitude and confidence. Choose pieces that make you feel sexy and you’ll photograph sexy, no matter what you’re wearing!
