Xperience Boudoir Photographer of the year 2018/2019

What’s the key to a successful Boudoir photo shoot?

Preparing yourself from head-to-toe! Here’s your insider guide to the top things you need to consider to prepare for your Boudoir photo shoot.

Give your feet and hands some love.

- Your hands and feet will be visible in most of your boudoir shots, so it’s important to get them camera ready.

- Get a manicure and pedicure, or at least do one yourself. People tend to forget about their nails, but they do show up in a majority of your photos. Chipped nail polish is not pretty.

- What’s the best polish shade to use? One that matches with all your lingerie outfits. Using the same colour on your fingernails and toenails is always a timeless look.

- If you want a bolder look a classic red tone adds a fierce and timeless touch to your overall boudoir look.

- Make sure the bottoms of your feet are clean; they will show in some of your photos.

Pamper your skin

- Drink lots of water leading up to your photo shoot and stay hydrated. Hydrated skin is happy skin.

- Use your favourite face lotion the day of your photo shoot to keep your skin looking fresh.

- Make sure your personal grooming is done in advance so there’s minimal redness, bumps or rash the day of your shoot. If you wax, schedule your photography session at least 3-5 days after waxing.

- Skin looks better in photos with a creamy, light glow. Don’t tan too much before your shoot if the sun is out (as it will leave lines), please don’t use fake tan or if you do please ensure it was 7 days prior to the shoot to allow it to fully dry.

- All skin tones are beautiful! Tanning is not required for mind blowing boudoir photos. It’s all about personal preference and whatever makes you feel fantastic!

- Skip the alcohol! Avoid partying or drinking the day before your shoot, as alcohol depletes the skin of vital nutrients and can have it looking dehydrated and dull, even in small doses. This goes hand in hand with the bullet point on hydration.

- Use clear deodorant as those white marks will show up on your skin.

- Don’t wear anything that will leave marks on your skin the day of your shoot (tight bra, tight knickers, socks etc…).

- Don’t get a new tattoo right before your session. If you want to have a new tattoo for your boudoir experience, be sure to get it done well in advance to allow healing time. You don’t want to be sticking to sheets or having any pain during your session.

- Piercings, just like tattoos, please ensure you're scheduling piercings with enough time to be healed for your session

- Use lip balm. Dry and cracked lips are not ideal for your boudoir session.

Liven up your sexy hair!

- Get your hair trimmed, coloured or touched up. Don’t let those stray greys concern you on your photo session. If you’re colouring your hair, stick to a colour that you know you’ll love! You want to feel like yourself throughout your photoshoot so keep this in mind when visiting the hair salon.

- Arrive to the studio with clean fully dry hair and no products in it.

- Clean up the eyebrows. If you want to have your eyebrows waxed or threaded, be sure to schedule the appointment for that at least a few days before your boudoir session. Otherwise, an eyebrow trim/touch up at home could be done a day or two before the shoot. Don’t try anything new here, you don’t want a small mistake to be documented and be feeling self-conscious.

Get your lingerie camera-ready

- Check your outfits for tags and cut them off. You don’t want them to show in your photos.

- Try it all on beforehand if its new to you, that way it will avoid any wardrobe malfunctions on the day.

- Keep your lingerie wrinkle-free by bringing every outfit on its own hanger.

- Choose the Lingerie to match the shoot,

o - If it’s the Bridal confidential bring the Bridal (or light bright style) lingerie, but don’t forget the Honeymoon collection

o - For the White Sheet Shoot bring a strapless white bra, or a Bra you can drop the straps off the shoulder to give that implied topless look.

o - For Boudoir/BoudNoir bring the darker colours o Always brings the heels and any jewellery/accessories you feel appropriate.

o -  Why not check out the What to wear section on my website.

- If your session includes the professional make-up make-over, then please arrive for your session with clean dry hair and no makeup (I know it's a scary thought), we will give you a full professional makeover from scratch and this will really help get the best results from your makeover.

- Wear loose fitting clothing to sit in your styling session before your shoot.

- Wash the bottom of your feet as they will show at times in the session!

- You should eat something before you come and feel free to bring snacks.

- Pack your bag – double and triple check you have everything you want packed

- Be sure to get a good sleep the night before.

- Bring your diary with you on the day so you can book in your viewing session.

Other things to consider

- Image ideas – Whilst I have prepared the Boudoir concept and have great ideas of how I wish it to look, please do feel free to Google or use Pinterest to get ideas of your own. Once you have found some you like, please send them over to JBM Photography before the session so we can at least look to factor them in.

- You could also practice your posing before the great session if you have seen some images ideas you like?

- Do push yourself to go a little bit outside of your comfort zone during the shoot. Some ladies think they will stay totally covered up during the entire shoot. Of course, you can if you want! But many ladies, once they are in the swing of it and having fun, decide to get a little risqué. I am not talking about totally nude or anything, but maybe a hint of nudity. I am all about making your photos tasteful and classy, but also creating something that you (and potentially your significant other) will LOVE.

- Some of the best shots come when you let down your guard a little.

Don’t be nervous…it’s going to be amazing!
